Stock Splits: More Slices, Same Pizza

Opening question: you own 3 shares at €200. After a 4-for-1 split you own 12. Are you richer?

Why this matters for beginners

Splits make headlines, but on their own they create no value. This is general education, not personal advice.

Main explanation

In a 4-for-1 split every share becomes 4 shares and the price is divided by 4.

Before: 3 shares × €200 = €600. After: 12 shares × €50 = €600. Same pizza, smaller slices.

Every shareholder gets the same multiple, so your ownership percentage stays exactly the same.

A split alone does not create investment value. Afterwards the market price can still move up or down for other reasons.

Example using a real company

Fictional Oak Labs splits 4-for-1: total shares go from 1m to 4m and the price from €200 to €50. Market cap stays €200m.

  • →3 × €200 = €600 becomes 12 × €50 = €600.
  • →Owning 3 of 1,000,000 shares (0.0003%) becomes 12 of 4,000,000 (still 0.0003%).

Common beginner mistakes

  • ✕Thinking more shares after a split means more wealth.
  • ✕Buying because a split made the price look cheaper.

Key terms

Stock split
Dividing each share into several, lowering the price per share proportionally.

Key takeaways

  • 01A split changes slice size, not the size of the pizza.

Try the concept on a real company

Look up a company that has split before and notice its market cap, not its share count, tells you its size.
