Why this matters for beginners
Splits make headlines, but on their own they create no value. This is general education, not personal advice.
Main explanation
In a 4-for-1 split every share becomes 4 shares and the price is divided by 4.
Before: 3 shares × €200 = €600. After: 12 shares × €50 = €600. Same pizza, smaller slices.
Every shareholder gets the same multiple, so your ownership percentage stays exactly the same.
A split alone does not create investment value. Afterwards the market price can still move up or down for other reasons.
Example using a real company
Fictional Oak Labs splits 4-for-1: total shares go from 1m to 4m and the price from €200 to €50. Market cap stays €200m.
- →3 × €200 = €600 becomes 12 × €50 = €600.
- →Owning 3 of 1,000,000 shares (0.0003%) becomes 12 of 4,000,000 (still 0.0003%).
Common beginner mistakes
- ✕Thinking more shares after a split means more wealth.
- ✕Buying because a split made the price look cheaper.
Key terms
- Stock split
- Dividing each share into several, lowering the price per share proportionally.
Key takeaways
- 01A split changes slice size, not the size of the pizza.
- 02Your ownership percentage is unchanged by a split.
Check yourself
- 01You own 3 shares at €200. After a 4-for-1 split, what do you hold?
- 02Does a split change your ownership percentage?
- 03Can the price move after a split?
Try the concept on a real company
Look up a company that has split before and notice its market cap, not its share count, tells you its size.
